Hike to Ramitay Daara
Home / Things To Do / Hike to Ramitay Daara

Duration :3 hours to full day
Difficulty : Moderate

By foot, the picnic site is 1.5-hour walk on a not-too-steep, well-defined uphill track, and about 45 minutes back down. By jeep it's half an hour's drive up followed by a 5-minute walk to the site. Alternative routes are available for the way back depending on the time and level of difficulty.

Ramitay Daara offers spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga range from a tranquil spot among the tea fields. A pleasant walk uphill that takes from 1 hour to 1.5 hours, the track offers lovely views of the surrounding hills and valleys as well as the snowy peaks when skies are clear.

Set off past the Glenburn Factory up through the main "market street" of Bora Gaon Village. You will pass the Glenburn Primary School, which is part of our Welfare Program and thanks to guest contributions we have repaired the roof and also started a Nursery and Kindergarten section, which is not normally part of the government curriculum. Morning assembly is held at 9am and you can visit the children in their classrooms during school hours or drop by the reading library in the afternoon on your way back.

Across the path from the school is our football field and site for our Annual Glenburn Workers' Festival. As you ascend a bit further you will pass through the lower part of Bhalukop Village where many of our Glenburn Hotel staff live. There is also a catholic church - Maria, Queen of the Hills - where mass is held every second Sunday. Close to the heart of the village you will pass the house of Maitasingh, our head cook, and his father Balakumar, our night watchman, might be sitting on the verandah as you walk by!

Once you reach the tea fields at the top of the path, a picnic will be served and you can easily spend a few hours here enjoying the panorama of mountains, valleys, rivers and tea fields from this position above the Glenburn bungalows.

There are a number of ways you can return to the Glenburn Bungalows and your guide will offer some alternatives to the same way back depending on the time you have and your level of fitness.

If you do not fancy the walk, a vehicle can drive you to and from a point that is 5 minutes' walk from the picnic site.
